Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI v Ashby Hastings on Sat 29 Apr 2006 at 2:00
Broomleys Cricket Club Lost by 84 runs

Match report The first match of the season saw Broomleys face Ashby Hastings at home. Ashby won the toss and decided to bat first. The Broomleys bowling line-up was missing a couple of names, but Jamie Hart and Mark Pearce, made sure that the home-side got off to a good start. Tight bowling from Hart, gave Pearce the chance to take the first wickets of the season when he bowled Hoult for 9 in the 6th over and then followed this up with Carline for 16 in the 18th. Tom Yates batting at the other end batted cautiously, giving little away, and when he saw the 3rd Ashby wicket fall to Pearce, the score had reached 96 in 30 overs. With Hart & Pearce both taken out of the attack, Neil Brotherhood & the newly appointed captain, Rob Hudson, took over the bowling attack. Brotherhood was rewarded with two wickets, the first a catch off his own bowling. Ashby had been reduced to 111 for 5 in 35 overs. Yates though was still battling on, and reached his half-century off 113 balls faced. With the help of Dooley, they managed to set Broomleys a target of 191 to win in 45 overs. Pearces’ final figures of 15 overs, 6 maidens, 3 wickets for 33 runs the highlight of the Broomleys bowlers, whilst Tom Yates ended on 78 not out, having batted through.
Broomleys had the worst possible start to their innings, loosing their first 3 wickets whilst only adding 10 runs to the total. Neil Brotherhood and Mark Pearce put on a further 29 valuable runs before Pearce was bowled by Colver. Andy Sarratt also tried to stick around to help Brotherhood, but perished in the 25th over, with the score on 66 for 5. Wickets kept falling, with Brotherhood out 4 runs later having scored 39, which left captain, Rob Hudson, to try to hold the innings together. But it was not going to be Hudsons’ or Broomleys day. Matt Ryan, whose opening spell with the ball saw him take 3 wickets for just 8 runs conceded, was bought back into the attack. Ryan took the final 3 Broomleys wickets only conceding a further 2 runs, to bowl Broomleys out for 106 in the 41st over. Ryans’ figures of 13 overs, 8 maidens, 6 wickets for 10 runs, certainly showing Ashby Hastings mean business this season.
