Sad Passing Of Brian Duncombe

01 Jan 2022

Brian Duncombe who was a player, coach and secretary at the club for a number of years has died. Thoughts are with Val and his family.

Brian joined Broomleys in 1960 playing cup games and sunday cricket until joining full time in 1970.

He was elected to the committee in 1963 and was chairman for a few years before becoming the secretary in 1968, a position he held until he retired from the committee in 2004. He was made a life member for the outstanding contribution he had made to the club.

He had a keen interest in junior cricket, running and coaching a number of teams over the years, including one with his grandson in, which gave him great pleasure.

As a player he was a hard hitting batsman scoring 10213 runs for the club, including 8 centuries and 52 fifties, with a top score of 124 not out v Ibstock Welfare. He also took 653 wickets bowling accurate off spin with 32 x  5 wicket performances and a best of 8 for 30 v Gracedieu. (figures are a minimum due to a number of missing scorebooks). He was the outstanding allrounder in the clubs 75 years history.

He was first team captain over a number of years with the highlight of the first team winning Division 1 of the North Leicestershire cricket league in 1980.

As a man he has helped a number of people over the years with coaching and advice. He always had time for people and was greatly admired.
