by James Sharpe

Broomleys 1st XI extended their lead at the top of Division One with a convincing winning draw away at The Langtons.

After a delayed start, with the match reduced to 36 overs-a-side, Broomleys lost the toss and were invited to bat. The home side struck first when Johnathan Orchiston chased a wide delivery from L. Linnet, and edged it to the keeper for 13.

Scott Moore joined David Bates at the crease, and the pair continued patiently in the face of disciplined bowling and a lively wicket. Still managing to put the bad ball away, they moved the Broomleys' total to 100 off 26 overs and, with wickets in hand, attempted to capitalise in the last 10 overs.

Throwing caution to the wind did not, at first, seem to pay off as both Bates (42) and Moore (41) lost their off-stumps in quick succession to Linnet and J. Lawrence respectively. With two new batsmen at the crease, a big total seemed out of sight. However, Mark Pearce soon changed that. Supported by Tom Foulds (14) and Phil Nash (4*), Pearce blasted the momentum back in Broomleys' favour, hitting 78 in just 40 balls including four sixes, one of which was launched out of the ground and into the neighbouring cornfield. After the 36 overs, Broomleys finished on 206 for 4.

In reply, The Langtons needed to get off to a good start if they stood any chance of chasing down such a large total. However, the visitors struck early as C. Stanley was caught behind off the bowling of Billy Read for 0 in the second over. Despite a steady fall of wickets, the home side were keeping up with the required rate. After 20 overs, with the Langtons' total way ahead of the Broomleys' score at the same stage, the match was still very much in the balance.

That was, however, until Farhan Shaukat (4-37) was brought back into the attack. In the first over of his second spell, three wickets in four balls took the Langtons' total from 94 for 4 to 97 for 7. After Birchall (2-37) picked up the eighth wicket, the hosts shut up shop completely. Broomleys were unable to pick up the final two wickets and the home side managed to hold out for a draw, finishing on 142 for 8.
