Match report Match Report: Broomleys CC 1st XI vs. Narborough and Littlethorpe CC 1st XI
by James Sharpe

Broomleys 1st XI continued to exert their dominance at the top of Division One with a crushing nine-wicket victory at home to Narborough and Littlethorpe.
After a convincing defeat at the hands of the league-leaders in the County Cup, Narborough were looking to exact some revenge when they travelled to Broomleys on Saturday.

On a very flat wicket which looked as though it would offer no assistance to the bowlers, the home side won the toss and, surprisingly, elected to field. The decision turned out to be inspired, however, as Broomleys struck early, Farhan Shaukat (4-16) trapping both Mick Whitmore for 4. Overseas player A. Dodd came in at three but was soon dismissed, caught by Phil Nash at slip off the bowling of Billy Read without scoring.

Opener L. Wolloff soon befell the same fate as his opening partner as he was adjudged LBW off the bowling off Shaukat for 13. Ex-Broomleys player Andy Clifton's return to his former club was not one to remember as he shouldered arms to a slower ball from Shaukat on nought, and proceeded to watch as it gently cannoned into middle stump.

The Narborough innings continued in a similar vein throughout, with nobody showing any real backbone. Captain Warren Birchall (4-23) continued where Shaukat had left off and made a mess of the visitor's middle-order, removing N. Cooper for a top-scoring 19, A. Wakeling for 5 and S. Cooper for 4. When number eleven, R. Cooper waltzed down the wicket at Birchall, missed it completely and was stumped by James Sharpe for 2, the Narborough innings closed on a measly 73 all out.

Chasing down such a low total in batsman-friendly conditions should not have caused Broomleys any problems, and that proved the case as openers Scott Moore and David Bates raced along to 20 without loss off the first 5 overs. However, in the seventh over with the score on 23, Narborough made the breakthrough when Moore was bowled for 12 attempting to sweep spinner Dodds.

Sharpe (21*) joined Bates (32*) at the crease and the two continued to propel the total towards the target, putting away anything slightly short or wide. It was not long before Broomleys crossed the finishing line, sealing victory in the 19th over.

This convincing victory sees the Witches maintain their 25-point cushion atop Division One going into their top-of-the-table clash with second place Ashby Hastings next Saturday.
