Match report
Match Report - Broomleys CC 1st XI vs. Earl Shilton CC 1st XI (H)
by James Sharpe
Broomleys' lead at the top of Division One was cut yet further when the weather and the rules cost them dearly when they were held to a losing draw at home to promotion-pushing Earl Shilton on Saturday.
The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket which looked a dream to bat on. S. Dakin and R. Chamberlain opened the batting for Shilton whilst Farhan Shaukat and Billy Read took the new ball for Broomleys. The batting side got off to a great start, seeing off the new ball and scoring quickly in the batsman-friendly conditions, reaching 40 without loss from the first 10 overs.
Broomleys finally made the breakthrough when Read slipped one through the defences of Chamberlain, removing his off-stump for 20. However, H. Ali came in at three and, despite being hit on the helmet first ball, carried on where Chamberlain had left off. Together with Dakin, they took the attack to the Broomleys attack, both passing their half-centuries and moving the Shilton total past three figures.
It was only with the introduction of Spin Twins, Warren Birchall (3-62) and Tom Foulds (3-68) that Broomleys finally took control of the game and managed to stem the Shilton onslaught. Dakin (65) was stumped by James Sharpe off the bowling of Foulds whilst Birchall had Ali (66) caught in the deep by Shaukat.
With the two settled batsmen dismissed, Broomleys began to squeeze and the run-rate soon slowed. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals, and despite the visitors passing the 200 mark, the hosts restricted Shilton to 209 for 7 from their 45 overs.
In the favourable batting conditions, Broomleys were confident that the target was well within their sights. Scott Moore and Guy Collier got the innings underway as Peter Crouch and Tom Verow took the new ball for Shilton. The run-chase started very positively for the league-leaders, with the two batsman battling well against the two young pace men and managing to put away any loose deliveries. Shilton finally made the breakthrough when Moore (28) smashed a short ball straight down mid-wicket's throat with the score on 66. Foulds (29) and Mark Pearce (17) continued to support Collier (42) as the Broomleys kept up with the required rate.
With just ten overs to go, the heavens opened and the players were taken off the field. Despite the shower lasting just ten minutes, Broomleys lost three overs of their innings, despite having to still chase down the full Shilton total. With victory now seemingly out of sight, the hosts just tried to get as close as possible. With one over to go, Broomleys needed 30 to win. However, Sharpe (16) and Jamie Hart (29*) were still going for victory. Sharpe launched the first ball out the park, and almost succeeded in doing the same second ball but was caught just inches inside the rope. Hart remained unfazed and proceeded to hit the third and fourth ball for six and the impossible was almost in touching distance. However, when the final two balls went for just two runs, Broomleys were made to settle for a disappointing losing draw.
As the players walked off the field, it seemed farcical that the match had had to be cut short for just ten minutes of rain when the sun was still shining. This was the difference between victory and merely a handful of a points as the three overs that were lost needlessly cost Broomleys dearly.
