Match report Match Report – Broomleys CC 1st XI vs. Rothley Park CC 1st XI (H)

Shaukat on Cloud Nine
By James Sharpe

Broomleys’ fast bowler Farhan Shaukat took 9 wickets as the league-leaders romped to a convincing 124-run victory at home to Rothley Park on Saturday.

Having lost the toss, Broomleys were put into bat. John Orchiston and Guy Collier opened the innings for the hosts, as J. Richardson and J. Hesketh took the new ball for the visitors.

It was Rothley who took the early advantage, with both openers being caught at gully off the bowling of Hesketh within the first 10 overs. It was left to Scott Moore and Mark Pearce to get the Broomleys’ innings back on track. The pair put on 70 for the third wicket, with Moore smashing his way to a blistering 46 which included three sixes before eventually falling to spinner N. Mason just four short of his half-century. Pearce soon followed, caught off the bowling of Richardson for a well-made 30.

When James Sharpe was caught behind without scoring, Broomleys looked to have lost all momentum with the score on 102 for 5. However, Tom Foulds (77) single-handedly swung the match back in the host’s favour. Supported by Shaukat (18) and Dave Broster (14 not out), the young batsman took the attack to the Rothley bowlers. Scoring all around the ground, he quickly passed his half-century before launching a full-blooded assault on Mason, taking the spinner’s last over for 20, hitting five fours in the over. When he was finally caught off the very last ball of the innings, the damage had already been done, with the Broomleys’ innings closing on 216 for 8.

With runs on the board, the hosts were confident but were looking for a quick breakthrough to really put Rothley under pressure. Their wish soon materialised as opener Richard Williams was caught at slip off the bowling of Shaukat for 7 before number three Richard Mear was cruelly adjudged LBW first ball.
Read soon joined the party as he had opener Mason trapped LBW for 9, much to the overseas player’s disgust.

While the middle order showed some resistance in the form of Sam Ward (22) and C. Bulmer (22 not out), it was The Shaukat Show from there on in. The fast bowler took all seven of the remaining wickets to return career best figures of 9-49, as Rothley were bowled out for just 92 off 22.2 overs. This result sees the Witches maintain their position atop Division One with just four games remaining.

Shaukat needs just four wickets from the last four matches to break the league record for number of wickets in a season, currently held by West Indian seamer Vaughn Walsh with 77 wickets.
