Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI v Earl Shilton Town on Sat 10 Jun 2006 at 2:00
Broomleys Cricket Club Lost by 1 Wicket
Match report
Earl Shilton won the toss at Broomleys and elected to field first. Neil Brotherhood & David Bates made a good start with the bat, putting on 49 runs in 10 overs before Bates was bowled. David Wick & Neil Brotherhood were both dismissed in quick succession, Brotherhood having made 37 before edging a catch to the keeper. Mark Pearce & Paul Leake both rode their luck with Leake being dropped on several occasions. Both players reached their half-centuries from 64 balls and the pair had put on a massive 153 runs for the 4th wicket before Leake finally succumbed & chipped a ball back to the bowler. Pearce was joined at the crease by the Broomleys captain, Rob Hudson, and the pair continued to amass runs, taking the score past 200 in the 37th over. Pearce reached his century from just 103 balls faced for being clean bowled by Turrell in the last over, having added 3 more runs to his tally. Broomleys had set the visitors what seemed to be a huge target of 270 for victory in just 45 overs.
Earl Shilton got off to a flying start in response, with Holmes & Chamberlain putting on 31 in the first 4 overs before Jamie Hart broke the partnership. Holmes & Higgins continued in the same vein showing that anything Broomleys could do so could they. A partnership of 96 was finally broken with Mark Pearce trapping Higgins LBW in the 22nd over, but not before he had scored 58 from just 44 balls. Pearce struck again, this time to dismiss Holmes for 56. The Earl Shilton batsmen kept plugging away and it took the introduction of Jamie Hart back into the attack before the next wickets fell, with Hart bowling Shaw and then Verow being run out in the same over with the Earl Shilton total being 204 for 5 after 36 overs. The Earl Shilton players were not to be denied their hard-fought victory, and despite David Joyce taking 3 wickets in an exhausting 13.5 over spell & Kevin Joyce chipping in with 1 wicket, Earl Shilton reached the target with 1 ball to spare.
