Market Harborough v Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 Jun 2012 at 1.00
Broomleys Cricket Club Won by 26 runs
Match report
Broomleys 1st XI fought back from being 35-5 to register a memorable 26-run win away at Premier Division giants Market Harborough.
The Witches battled their way to 176-9 after a dreadful start before bowling out the hosts for just 150.
After being put into bat on a very green and wet wicket, Broomleys got off to a disastrous start, losing their top three all for single figures.
Opener Jack Berrisford (7) was bowled by Toby Lester, number three Scott Moore (5) was trapped LBW by Kevin Innes and fellow opener John Orchiston (6) was caught at slip off the bowling of Simon Renshaw.
When Irfan Karim and Tom Foulds both fell without scoring, the Witches were in desperate trouble at 35-5.
But a partnership of 71 between the destructive Mitchell Buck and Zac Howard (19) gave the Broomleys’ innings a glimmer of hope as they pair moved the total past the 100 mark.
Buck was naturally aggressive and looked counter attack, as he hit seven fours and a six on his way to a crucially important 46. But when they both lost their wickets with the score on 106, the visitors were back in trouble at 107-7.
Harborough spinner Ben Collins (3-12) caused the Broomleys’ batsmen serious problems and when he dismissed Jamie Hart (16) and James Sharpe (2), the Witches were 139 with just one wicket left and more than ten overs left to bat.
But a crucial tenth-wicket partnership of 37 from Warren Birchall (14 not out) and Billy Read (23 not out) saw the visitors battle through to reach a very respectable 176-9 from their 50 overs.
On a wicket that was extremely bowler-friendly, Broomleys were confident they had a score to bowl at if they could take some early wickets.
However, the first wicket was a long time coming. Openers Nick O’Donovan and Harveer Gandam got the hosts off to a flyer, hitting 61 in the first ten overs for the loss of no wicket.
It was the introduction of Buck’s leg spin that started to turn the game back into Broomleys’ favour. In his first over he had Gandam caught behind by Sharpe for 23 before bowling O’Donovan for 38 a few overs later.
When Read (1-16) had the destructive Innes caught at slip and Birchall (1-15) caught ex-Broomleys’ captain Neil Pullen off his own bowling for six runs apiece, Harborough had slipped to 89-4.
Harvinder Uppal (26) and Renshaw (24) tried to get the innings back on track, batting patiently in the face of very tight bowling from the Broomleys spin attack and moving the total to a comfortable 126-4.
But it was Buck again who changed the game. After a mix up with the Harborough batsmen’s calling, he picked the ball up at midwicket and threw the stumps down leaving Uppal short of his ground.
Howard (4-46) then made short work of the Harborough lower order dismissing Michael Phillips (1), Chris Gordan (1) and Lester (5) all for single figures.
At 147-8, Broomleys now looked favourites to clinch a momentous victory.
When Buck (3-25) trapped Renshaw LBW, Harborough’s last hope of winning the game was back in the pavilion. And when Harborough number 11 Chris Weir edged the ball through to Sharpe for a duck off Howard, the hosts were all out for 150 from 46.3 overs.
