Lutterworth v Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 23 Jun 2012 at 1.00
Broomleys Cricket Club Won by 66 runs
Match report
A magnificent hundred from Paul Dixey set the precedent as Broomleys 1st XI secured a 66-run win over Lutterworth.
His century helped the Witches to an extremely competitive 268-6 from their 50 overs before bowling out the home side for just 202.
Following their victory in the Leicestershire t20 final last Sunday, the Witches were hoping to do the double over Lutterworth when they met again in the league on Saturday.
Dixey – brought into the side to give the Leicestershire player some time at the crease as he fights for his place in the county’s first XI – showed his class from the beginning, running the Lutterworth fielders ragged and punishing anything slightly short or off-line.
He was supported well by fellow opener John Orchiston (25), number three Scott Moore (24) and the explosive Mitchell Buck (26).
When he was finally caught by Craig Wilson off the bowling of Sam Green (2-51) for 105, he had already taken the Witches past the 200-mark.
When Zac Howard was run out without facing a ball, it was left to the heroes of the t20 final Tom Foulds (28 not out) and Jamie Hart (37 not out) to capitalise on the fantastic foundation set by the top order. The pair smashed the last six overs for 66 runs with both batsman hitting the ball out of the ground.
At the end of the 50 overs, Broomleys had amassed 268-6.
In reply, Lutterworth never looked to be in the game as they struggled to build any meaningful partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals.
Billy Read (2-26) was the pick of the seamers and quickly dismissed opener Jarrad Pickering (9) bowling him in his second over.
But it was the Broomleys spin attack of Foulds, Buck and captain Warren Birchall that really put the squeeze on Lutterworth. Birchall (2-35) had opener Steven Masic (11) sharply caught by Buck at short extra cover in his first over and then had Lewis Hill (17) caught by Orchiston a few overs later.
Foulds (2-34) bowled Alec Mill for 18 before having Charlie Hack caught in the deep by Irfan Karim for nine while Buck (3-41) trapped Ashley Rayner lbw for 21 and the destructive Craig Wilson caught by Birchall at cover for a quick-fire 27.
When Buck had Nathan Wellham caught behind by James Sharpe first ball and Howard bowled Warren Evans for 5, Lutterworth were 177 for 9 and on the brink of defeat.
Captain Karl Smith produced some late innings fireworks hitting five sixes and four fours on his way to a blistering 57.
But he had come in far too low in the order and it proved too little too late. He was eventually caught at midwicket by Karim off the bowling of Read and Lutterworth were all out for 202 from 46.2 overs.
The 66-run victory gave Broomleys 24 points and took them to fourth in the Premier Division going into Saturday’s home clash with bottom of the table Thorpe Arnold.
