Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI v Thorpe Arnold on Sat 30 Jun 2012 at 1.00
Match was Drawn Losing (2 runs)
Match report
A disappointing batting display saw Broomleys 1st XI slip to a disappointing losing draw at home to bottom-of-the-table Thorpe Arnold 1st XI.
The Witches failed to knock off their target of 135 - finishing just three runs short on 132-9 in a rain-affected encounter.
After a delayed start, the match was reduced to 40 overs a side. Broomleys captain Warren Birchall won the toss and elected to field.
The home side got off to a great start, making the most of the bowler-friendly conditions, as the Thorpe Arnold top five batsmen were all dismissed for single figures.
Billy Read (4-16) continued his run of form with the ball and quickly dismissed both openers. He bowled Dilruk Yahathugoda for 5 and had Tom Smith edge behind to keeper James Sharpe for 4.
Read was supported well by fellow seamers Jamie Hart (1-16), John Orchiston (1-13) and Zac Howard (1-33). Hart had number three Myles Hickman caught behind for 2, Howard had Jake Gillett caught by Phil Nash for 6 and Orchiston had Mark Matthews caught by Scott Moore for 7.
After 20 overs, Thorpe Arnold were struggling at 56-5. But a belligerent 49 from Brian Makwana - including six fours and two sixes - swung the momentum back in the visitors' favour. His innings took the total past the 100 mark before eventually being caught at mid off by Read off the bowling of Birchall (3-17).
Chris Waldron (18) showed some resistance but the tail was soon dismissed and Thorpe Arnold were all out for 134 from 37.4 overs - giving Broomleys 42 overs to knock off the total.
Of the 134, some 29 were extras, with the Witches bowling the equivalent of four extra overs through wides and no balls.
In reply Broomleys got off to an appalling start as opener Orchiston was caught for 1 when a rising ball from Leicestershire CCC bowler Alex Wyatt (2-17) caught the shoulder of the bat and looped to gully, and number three Scott Moore was bowled by Makwana (1-18) for 3.
Last week's centurion Paul Dixey could not repeat last week's heroics and was caught behind off the bowling of Hickman (1-26) for 14. After 20 overs, Broomleys were stumbling along at 40-3.
Irfan Karim struggled to find the gaps and was eventually bowled by Luke Clark (2-24) for a very patient 10.
The in-form Tom Foulds (39) was the only top-order batsman to find his feet in the tough conditions and looked his usual fluent self. But when Jake Gillett (2-28) caught him off his own bowling and had Phil Nash (12) caught in the deep, Broomleys were under pressure at 93-6. The situation worsened when Howard (4) and Hart (0) were both dismissed cheaply.
Sharpe and Birchall steadied the ship while slowly working their way toward the target. When Birchall hit a huge six off Hickman, Broomleys needed just 14 runs from 2.3 overs.
But a complete mix up between the two left Birchall stranded and he was run out for 15 with the hosts 122-9.
Last man Read (4 not out) partnered Sharpe (14 not out) as the pair moved to the last over needing eight to win with one wicket left with Wyatt to bowl it.
It came down to the final ball with Broomleys needing four to win - all three results possible. Sharpe got hold of it but it was cut off by Makwana in the deep and Broomleys fell just three runs short, finishing on 132-9 from their 42 overs.
Despite not losing the game, Broomleys were disappointed not to win a game they felt they should have. They will need to pick themselves up as they travel to Leicester Ivanhoe on Saturday.
