Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI v Bitteswell on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 1:30
Broomleys Cricket Club Won by 8 Wickets
Match report
Following 2 successive victories, Broomleys were looking to consolidate their position in the league when they took on Bitteswell at home on Saturday. Having won the toss, David Bates asked Bitteswell to bat first. His confidence in Elson Johnson & Kevin Joyce was rewarded in the 7th over when Johnson took 2 wickets in 3 balls to dismiss Hutchinson & Miller. Johnson took his 3rd wicket in his following over when Rob Hudson took a catch to dismiss Clarke & leave Bitteswell struggling on 18 for 3. D Fradley & Dand put on 41 before Kevin Joyce had Dand caught behind by James Sharpe. Fradley reached his half-century from 88 balls as he and Young had a 5th wicket partnership of 55 to take Bitteswell to 114 in the 35th over. Young became Joyces’ 2nd victim when he was caught by Mark Concannon for 27. Not to be out-done, Kevin Wardle then joined in the wicket taking when he clean bowled S Fradley first ball. Bates re-introduced Johnson to dismiss D Fradley for 53, but then it was left to Kevin Joyce & Kevin Wardle to finish off the Bitteswell batsmen. With only P Smith showing any resistance, Bitteswell were bowled out for 140 in the 44th over, leaving Broomleys a target of 141 with 46 overs in which to get them. Bitteswell had a dream start when Dand dismissed Neil Brotherhood in the first over and then Paul Leake in the 9th with the addition of only 31 runs, but the Broomleys captain, David Bates, was not going to be denied his victory. Bates along with Mark Pearce made sure that no further wickets fell in the match and with confident batting, they took the match away from Bitteswell convincingly. The pair batted well together taking advantage of some lack-lustre bowling. Bates finished the match on 57 not out from 108 balls faced, gallantly batting out an over with the scores tied in order that Pearce could also reach his 50 from 70 balls, hitting a four to win the match
