Countesthorpe v Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI on Sat 09 Sep 2006 at 1:00
Broomleys Cricket Club Won by 5 Wickets
Match report
Broomleys lost the toss away at Countesthorpe and were asked to field first. Kevin Joyce struck in his first over when he clean bowled Garrard, then he followed this up in his third over, trapping Mohtat LBW to reduced Countesthorpe to 19 for 2 in the 6th over. A third wicket partnership of 53 was broken when David Joyce was brought into the bowling attack and captain, David Bates, took the first of his 3 catches of the day to dismiss Anthony in the 19th over. Countesthorpe battled back with the help of a stand of 104 between Coulson and Pierce, Coulson reaching his half-century form 81 balls faced. He was finally dismissed when David Bates moved Mark Pearce in the field, only to have Coulson pick the man out on the boundary. He had scored 78. Elson Johnson & Jamie Hart bowled well in tandem, with all the Countesthorpe batsmen finding it difficult to get a bat on Harts’ bowling. Harts’ figures of 13 overs 1 maiden 2 wickets for 39 showing the effort he had put in. The Broomleys captain was happy with the overall performance of his bowlers, restricting Countesthorpe to 225 for 8 from their 45 overs on a pitch that looked ideal for batting on.
Broomleys knew that, with the batting line-up they had, that 226 for victory was well within their capabilities. This was proven from the start with the opening pair of Neil Brotherhood and David Wick taking runs at their leisure. Brotherhood reached his half-century from just 45 balls faced and the pair were cruising. They had put on 108 runs in just 16 overs before Wick was bowled by Sutton for 39. James Sharpe continued where Wick had left off and Brotherhood was soon on his way to another century, reaching that mile-stone from just 80 balls. Brotherhood and Sharpe had put on 74 runs before he was finally dismissed for 112 in the 30th over, leaving Broomleys requiring 44 for victory and 15 overs in which to get them. Countesthorpe had not quite given up on the match and took 3 quick Broomleys wickets before Paul Leake and Jamie Hart came together in the 32nd over. This experienced pair made sure of the victory with Hart taking 14 runs from the 40th over to end the match on 24 not out from 21 balls faced and ensure that Broomleys would be playing Division 1 cricket next season.
