Electricity Sports v Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 20 May 2012 at 1.30
Broomleys Cricket Club Won by 131 runs

Match report A belligerent hundred from Mitchell Buck set the precedent as Broomleys 1st XI eased their way into the second round of the County Cup with a convincing 131 run victory away at Electricity Sports.

Batting first, the Witches set the hosts a target of 235 from their 40 overs. But a spell of three wickets for just seven runs from captain Warren Birchall lead the way as Electricity Sports were bowled out for just 104 on Sunday.

Winning the toss, Birchall elected to bat first on a wicket that looked great for batting.

And so it proved as openers Mitchell Buck and Jack Berrisford got Broomleys off to a flyer reaching 68 without loss from the first 10 overs.

But it was Buck (118) who stole the limelight yet again crashing the ball continuously to the boundary with the batsmen around him being forced to play supporting roles.

He brought up his century before 20 overs had even been bowled, amassing a staggering boundary count of 23 fours and a six. He was supported well by Berrisford (27), Irfan Karim (29) and Guy Collier (17) before eventually falling to the bowling of Shahid Amin (2-29).

At 178-3 Broomleys looked set to post a massive first innings total but tight bowling from James Blackburn (4-30) and Mahmood Sani (2-48) triggered a slight middle order collapse as Broomleys lost six wickets for 57 runs and stumbled to 235-9 at the end of their 40 overs.

In reply, Electricity Sports never really got going and lost wickets at regular intervals and were unable to deal with the Broomleys four-man spin attack.

Birchall (3-7) opened the bowling with his left-arm spin and tied them down immediately, going for just seven runs from his eight overs. He removed openers Andy Laycock (0) and Ranbir Singh (6) quickly before having number three Ash Aggarwal stumped by keeper James Sharpe for 16.

Matt Bray (2-23), Buck (2-27) and Karim (2-10) continued to wreak havoc with the middle order and only Sani (38) offered any sustained resistance for the hosts. But when he too was stumped by Sharpe off the bowling of Karim and number 11 Mat Shepherd was trapped LBW the very next ball, Electricity Sports were all out for just 104.

Broomleys came out comfortable winners by a margin of 131 runs and are through to the second round which is to be played on June 10.
