Broomleys Cricket Club 1st XI v Bitteswell on Sat 28 Apr 2007 at 2.00
Broomleys Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
On a glorious April Saturday Broomleys started their 1st division campaign with a home fixture against Bitteswell. Captain David Bates won the toss and decided to put Bitteswell in to bat which proved to be a good decision as opener Clarke was ran out without facing a ball in the first over. His opening partner Fradley followed a few overs later caught behind by a good catch from stumper Botham off the bowling of Pearce.
Bitteswell number 3 Dax Miller struck some lusty blows as he attempted to drag his side out of a sticky situation however he lost partner Desai who was bowled by Pearce. Miller and Dand began to bring Bitteswell back into the game but both fell in quick succession as Miller was brilliantly caught and bowled by Elson Johnson and Dand was bowled by Kevin Wardle. Clarke pushed it around to grind out a 50 but then fell to Johnson who had troubled him throughout the afternoon.
Then Bitteswell crumbled as they fell from 175-5 to the final total of 186 as Kevin Joyce returned to clean off a couple with help from a great catch by Neil Brotherhood. Wardle picked another wicket up as Hudson took a good catch on the boundary after a couple of chances had already gone begging. A sloppy mix up between the last two men brought an end to the Bitteswell innings at 186 in 44 overs as Broomleys’ four bowlers’ shared two wickets apiece as well as two run outs.
Broomleys’ chase got off to a positive star as both opening bowlers saw balls flying off to the boundaries. Neil Brotherhood brought his 50 up in no time as he crunched drives all around the ground. Youngster Dave Wick fell for 17 to Smith. Brotherhood continued his onslaught with more exquisite driving through both offside and leg. However a lapse in concentration saw the end of Brotherhood as he picked out the man at square leg but a superb 90 to start the vice captains season.
Mark Pearce’s entrance to the crease did not slow the rate down as he blazed the ball to the boundary on several occasions as he and Rob Hudson saw Broomleys home comfortably with 10 overs to spare.
A great start for Broomleys with an emphatic win to get them rolling whilst Bitteswell will have a slight taste of cabbage in their mouths after their lacklustre performance.
